Fire Alarms

Commercial fire alarm systems designed around your site

A fire alarm system is one of the most important safety systems in any commercial building. For warehouses, logistics operations and factories, where large open spaces, high ceilings and stored goods change the way smoke and heat behave, the design matters as much as the equipment.

MSME Security designs and installs fire detection and alarm systems for commercial and industrial premises across the East Midlands. Your engineer visits the site, looks at the layout, the activities carried out in each area and the people who use the building, and designs a system that suits it.

Because we also install access control, CCTV and intruder alarms, your fire alarm can be planned alongside your other systems. For example, doors controlled by access control can be set to release when the fire alarm activates, so that escape routes are never locked when they are needed.

What we install

What a commercial fire alarm system can include

  • Conventional and addressable panels

Conventional systems suit smaller premises. Addressable systems identify the exact device that has triggered, which is a real advantage on large sites.

  • Smoke, heat and multi sensor detectors

Different areas need different detection. Kitchens, plant rooms, offices and warehouse floors are each matched with a suitable detector type.

  • Detection for high ceilings

Large warehouses and distribution centres often need detection designed for tall, open spaces, such as optical beam detectors.

  • Manual call points

Clearly positioned break glass call points on escape routes and at exits so anyone can raise the alarm quickly.

  • Sounders and visual beacons

Audible sounders and visual alarm devices sized for the building, including noisy production areas where a sounder alone may not be enough.

  • Integration with other systems

Links to access control door releases, plant shutdown and other building systems, planned as part of one coordinated design.

Typical uses

Fire detection for the buildings we work in

  • Warehouses and distribution centres

Large footprints, high racking and long travel distances call for careful zoning and detection that suits tall spaces.

  • Manufacturing and industrial units

Production areas, dust, heat and noise all affect which detectors and sounders will work reliably.

  • Offices and mixed use buildings

Systems that protect staff and visitors across offices, meeting rooms, stairwells and shared areas.

  • Retail and trade premises

Detection and alarms for shop floors, stock rooms and back of house areas, with clear call points at every exit.

Good to know

Your responsibilities and how we help

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for a non domestic building in England must carry out a fire risk assessment and make sure there are suitable arrangements for detecting a fire and warning the people inside. In most commercial premises that means a properly designed fire alarm system.

The British Standard code of practice for fire detection and alarm systems in non domestic premises is BS 5839-1. It covers system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance, and it recommends that systems are serviced at least every six months.

We will talk you through the options for your building in plain terms, design a system that matches your fire risk assessment and your budget, and agree a sensible maintenance arrangement once the system is in.

How we work

Our installation process

Every project follows the same straightforward steps, led from start to finish by one experienced engineer.

  1. 01

    Initial contact

Call our team on 01332 492002 or send an enquiry using the form. Tell us a little about your site and what you need.

  2. 02

    Site inspection

One of our engineers, who will be your point of contact from then on, visits at an agreed time to assess your current security, identify shortfalls and consider areas for improvement.

  3. 03

    Consultation

You and your engineer talk through the finer details. No two businesses are the same, so we consider everything from previous incidents to your industry and location.

  4. 04

    Design

With your budget in mind, your engineer designs a system specifically for your facility, including any extras that would genuinely help, such as CCTV software or connected intercoms.

  5. 05

    Quotation

We produce a final quotation covering sourcing, installation and labour costs, free of charge.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about fire alarm systems

What is the difference between a conventional and an addressable fire alarm?

A conventional system groups detectors into zones, so the panel tells you which zone has activated. An addressable system identifies each individual device, so you know exactly where the alarm was raised. Addressable systems are usually the better choice for larger buildings.

Does my business need a fire alarm system?

Most commercial premises need a way of detecting a fire and warning the people inside. Your fire risk assessment will set out what is required for your building. We can design a system that meets the findings of that assessment.

How often should a commercial fire alarm be serviced?

BS 5839-1 recommends that fire alarm systems are inspected and serviced at least every six months by a competent person, with regular user tests carried out in between.

Can a fire alarm be linked to access control?

Yes. Doors fitted with electronic locks can be set to release automatically when the fire alarm activates, keeping escape routes clear. We plan this as part of the overall design.

Can you install a fire alarm in a large warehouse?

Yes. Warehouses and distribution centres have particular challenges, including high ceilings and racking. We design detection and alarm coverage around the building and how it is used.
